Return to Queen’s Best Wishes for VI Flag’s 150th

VICCS’ Correspondence w/ Her Majesty

Her Majesty The Queen
Buckingham Palace

February 27, 2015

Dear Sir,

We were pleased to read of Her Majesty The Queen’s generous remarks on the 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag, celebrated recently on February 15th.VI Flaq, Q Victoria, Poster- historical, july'15 (2)

On behalf of Canadians now resident here on the west coast, where Captain James Cook was the first European to step onto the Island, we would like to similarly invite Her Majesty to recognize the 150th anniversary of the flag of Vancouver Island.

As head of the Commonwealth, and direct descendant of Queen Victoria, who’s name honours our provincial capital, we are certain Her Majesty is aware of the important place that Britain and the Royal family hold here on Vancouver Island. Her Majesty’s recognition of our shared history would further strengthen the bond that began with the British Empire first exploring the Pacific coast …Her Majesty’s recognition of our shared history in effect being the ‘icing on the cake’ in celebrating our flag’s 150th anniversary.

By way of a short digression our footnote provides a brief overview and image of Vancouver Island’s flag, as well as touching on our long and proud history in association with Great Britain.

It is in this manner, recognizing the 150th anniversary of the Vancouver Island flag, that we wish to remember and honour Vancouver Island’s past – taking note of the measured steps, visionaries and hard work that laid the foundation of this country. So too we believe our common bonds and heritage link all members of the Commonwealth, serving to remind us of the values and democratic traditions we share.

In this respect, lacking familiarity with accepted protocols – while hoping Her Majesty will forgive our enthusiasm, we would make our wishes known. Should it be possible, we would very much welcome a statement from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, marking this special occasion in our history, the 150th anniversary of the flag of Vancouver Island.

If we might provide further information, or act in other ways to facilitate Her Majesty’s interest in Vancouver’s Island, please do not hesitate to be in touch.

Yours faithfully,
